February 25, 2008

There is really not much to say about today. All we did in class was complete a lab that involves a block of wood. The block of wood was placed at an incline in which it would be able to slide down at a constant velocity to see what forces were acting on it and which force become large enough to move the piece of wood down the incline. For the other trials, a string was attached to the block of wood and the string was passed over the pulley at the end of the inclined. For these trials the angle of the inclined was increased by 10 degrees and we needed to attach enough masses at the free end of the string so that the block will move up the plain with constant velocity when it is only given a slight push to overcome the static friction.

That's about it for my blog post the next scribe will be, DUONG.

Tuesday Feb 12 - Kinematics Test

All right, if you didn't read it yet, I said in the previous post for Monday that I would do the Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday scribes.

For Tuesday, all we did was the test for this unit.

So, nothing to report really.

Monday Feb 11 - Kinematics

Hey everybody, sorry this scribe post was up so late and that it will be really short. I didn't really know I was scribe until earlier on this afternoon. So I'll be doing the scribes for Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday.

So on Monday, all we did was go over the questions we were supposed to have done, 40-42. To see the answers look at Mondays Feb 11th's slides.

Afterwards, we everyone either worked on the assignments meant to be handed in (the Pink sheet and the Gray sheet) or the review questions on acceleration for the test on Tuesday.

So we really didn't do much that day, and was basically a study period.

The scribe for Feb 14, Thursday will be posted on the Wednesday scribe.

FRIDAY'S Class

On Friday, we went over the sheet from the text book. The first question asked us to create a series of arbitrary vector quantities (two vectors) and identify the vector that could represent Vpg, which is the velocity with perspective to the ground.

The first one is correct because the vector with perspective to the ground is the longest side AND it meets a tail and a tail and the other end meets an arrow with an arrow. The second one is incorrect because every side is an arrow and a tail.

The second question deals with an airplane and a passenger walking on the plane. When you're dealing with questions that ask for a maximum and minimum velocity, it is collinear. Because the object is either moving with the velocity or moving in the opposite direction.

MAXIMUM VELOCITY
100 km/h + 1.5 km/h = 101.5 km/h

It would be 100 km/h + 1.5 km/h because with respective to the ground the plane is already traveling at 100 km/h and since the passenger is walking in the same direction at a speed of 1.5km/h that is added to the planes speed which gives us a total of 101.5 km/h.

MINIMUM VELOCITY
100 km/h - 1.5 km/h = 98.5 km/h

The minimum speed with respect to the ground would be 98.5 km/h because since the plane is heading one direction, in this case to the East, and the passenger is walking 1.5 km/h in the opposite direction [W] then we subtract the velocities to get the minimum velocity.

The third question dealt with two cars, Car A with a ground speed of 80 km/h and Car B with a ground speed of 45 km/h.

a) Both cars are heading in the same direction. A behind B in the reference frame of A.

45 km/h - 80 km/h = -35km/h

We would subtract because since Car A is gaining speed on Car B then it seems as though Car B is slower because Car A is going at 80 km/h which is faster than 45 km/h.

b) Use the reference frame of B for part a
It would be 80 km/h - 45 km/h = 35 km/h because Car A is faster and since it's behind Car B that means it looks like it's gaining speed on Car B

c) Both cars are heading towards each other. Take the reference frame of A.
It would be 45 km/h + 80 km/h = 125 km/h. Because both cars are heading towards one another, it makes it look as though the other car is coming at you faster cause your in motion and they are too coming towards you.

d) Use B's reference frame for part c
It's 125 km/h, its the same thing as part c. Same reasoning and logic.

The next question deals with a boat that wishes to travel east. If there is a current of 10 km/h flowing north and the boat is capable of traveling at 30 km/h, find the heading and velocity of the boat as seen by a person on shore.

For number 38 you can solve the for the missing side and angle by using the cosine law because it's not a right angled triangle so we cannot use the Pythagorean theorem. We already know two sides and an angle, that's enough information to find the other missing side and angle.
Et Voila! That was Friday's class. And i believe that JESSICA is the scribe for tonight. Once again I'm terribly sorry for not scribing on Thursday or Friday, it totally slipped my mind. So to make up for it I actually tried on this scribe and finished Thursday's scribe as well. Sorry and hope this helps. Oh, and TEST tomorrow, so study and practice kiddy's.

THURSDAY'S Class

I was supposed to scribe for Thursday's class, unfortunately I forgot to scribe that night. I also forgot to scribe for Friday's class as well (I can't believe that I forgot to scribe for those two days T_T), i apologize for not scribing. Well, on thursday we were given worksheets to work on. The worksheet with the questions from the text book was what we were supposed to work on because on friday we were going to go over it. Just a reminder the pink worksheet was supposed to be handed in on Monday and the ivory sheet is supposed to be handed in on Tuesday. For the rest of the class most people worked on the pink sheet or the sheet that had questions from the text book.

Relative Motion Problems

Wednesday, February 6, 2008

Hmm?

Well well well, since there was so much that happened today in class I don't know where to begin. First we went over the questions that we were given on our first day of semester two, and since they were pretty easy, we got through them relatively fast. Then we viewed some sides on deriving formulas in which we were given a second worksheet like the first one and given 2 other handouts. The pink sheet is for marks and is due for Monday so no worries, and for the other sheet with questions 31-42 I don't remember if they are supposed to be handed in. Well that's all I can think of for today's class, so enjoy the night. O yea the next scribe will be SAMUS
